Basal cells are located in the lower layers of multi-layered epithelium and pockets in single-layered epithelium. (1)
What damages basal cells?
The cells of the deepest layer are columnar, known as basal cells, which are attached by muliprotein complexes known as hemidesmosomes to an underlying basement membrane. (2)
