BEFORE: A 55-year old woman developed night blindness over the course of two years. She was fine in the daytime but almost blind in the dark. She had a history of Crohn’s disease. She smoked 10 cigarettes daily and drank 5 to 6 units of alcohol weekly. She did not eat fruit. She ate lots of vegetables. Doctors gave her 50,000 IUs of vitamin A by injection to bypass her digestive system. After 18 months her night vision dramatically improved. (2, 3)
