What is a rod cell?
A rod cell is a type of photoreceptor cell. (3)
A rod cells can be thought of as a low-resolution black-and-white webcam. (2)
A rod cell (night) vision is not as effective as cone (daylight) vision and only allows you to distinguish black, white, shades of grey and the general outline of objects. (2)
What does a rod cell do?
A rod cell perceive black and white (1)
enabled night vision (1)
exposure to bright light quickly breaks down the visual purple and blinds the rod cells. (2)
Where are rod cells located?
Rod cells are fairly well distributed over the entire retina. (2, 3)
Rod cells predominate in nocturnal animals and are most sensitive to reduced light intensities. (3) In humans, rod cells provide night vision and aid in visual orientation. (3)
