Portable Battery Chargers

What is a portable charger?

Portable battery chargers, also known as power banks, can be defined as portable batteries that use circuitry to control any power in and power out. They can charge using a USB charger when power is available, and can then be used to charge battery powered items like mobile phones and a host of other devices that would normally use a USB charger. The term "power bank" can be likened to a financial bank where funds can be deposited, stored, then withdrawn when needed. These items are also often referred to as portable chargers, as they can charge items like mobile phones without the need to be connected to shore power during charging, although they will need to be charged, and this normally requires a charger connected to shore power.

What is a mAh?

The maximum amount of power that a power bank can be charged to is measured in mAh. mAh is an abbreviation for milliamp hours. So 1,000 mAh battery would supply 1,000 mA, or 1 amp, for one hour.

What is QC 3.0?

QC is an abbreviation for Quick Charge, made by Qualcomm, with the current version being 3.0. It is engineered to charge devices up to four times faster than conventional charging. It is up to 45% more efficient than Quick Charge 2.0 and compatible with the full range of USB connection types, from USB Type-A to USB Type-C.

What is an input port?

The points at which electronic devices can have a wire connected to them for charging or data transfer are called ports. An input port is the port where your portable power will receive power to charge itself up.

What is an output port?

An output port is a port where the power bank will charge your devices, such as phones, tablets, and other devices. Typical output ports are USB ports and DC ports.

What is USB?

USB is an abbreviation for Universal Serial Bus. It is a standard of connectors and ports that can connect greater than 130 different types of peripherals, including cell phones, tablets, printers, digital cameras, and many more. A desktop PC may have a half-dozen USB ports, and a laptop may have just a couple. If you've used a mouse, a digital camera, or a printer, you're familiar with the three types (USB Type-A, USB Type-B and USB Type-C) of USB connectors and their respective ports.

What is USB-C?

USB-C is a version of USB that is reversible, meaning there is no upside-down orientation; any way you try to plug in a USB-C cable is the correct way.

What is DC?

DC is an acronym for direct current. Direct current is the unidirectional flow of electric charge. A battery uses DC current to charge devices.

What is pass-through charging?

Pass through charging is the ability to charge the power bank and an electronic device connected to the power bank at the same time. Not all power banks support pass-through charging, mainly because it may reduce the battery lifespan.

What is difference between lithium ion vs. lithium polymer (lithium-ion polymer) batteries?

Lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery format that first grew in popularity thanks to their adoption by major electronics companies in the early 1990s. They are essentially a group of very rigid electricity generating compartments, which consists of three pieces: a positive electrode; a negative electrode; and an electrolyte, or liquid chemical compound between them. Most lithium-ion batteries, unlike more traditional ones, also include an electronic controller, which regulates power and discharge flows so your battery doesn't overheat or explode. The most significant difference between lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries is the chemical electrolyte between their positive and negative electrodes. In lithium-polymer batteries, or Li-Po batteries, the chemical electrolyte isn't a liquid. Instead, Li-Po technology uses one of three forms: a dry solid, which was largely phased out during the prototyping years of lithium polymer batteries; a porous chemical compound; or a gel-like electrolyte. The most popular among these is the last one, which is the type you'll find in newer laptop computers and electric cars. The catch is that plenty of companies are not actually selling you a true Li-Po battery, instead it's a lithium-ion polymer battery, or a Li-ion in a more flexible casing.

Is one better than the other?
Both lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries have their pros and cons. Typically, the advantages of a lithium-ion is their high power density, lack of what's called the memory effect (when batteries become harder to charge over time), and their significantly lower cost than lithium-polymer. In the words of Wired, "Lithium-ion batteries are incredibly efficient. They stuff freakish amounts of energy in a tiny package.” But, as anyone might have seen with the recent saga of a certain cellphone brand being banned from flights, lithium-ion batteries are inherently unstable, suffer from aging, and are potentially dangerous. If the barrier that separates the positive and negative electrode is ever breached, the chemical reaction can cause combustion (fire). As Li-ion batteries have become more popular in consumer electronics, businesses have tried to lower costs by cutting corners. While quality batteries are perfectly safe, you should always be careful when buying no-name brands. Lithium-polymer batteries on the other hand are generally robust and flexible, especially when it comes to the size and shape of their build. They are also lightweight, have an extremely low profile, and have a lower chance of suffering from leaking electrolyte. But lithium-polymer batteries aren't perfect either: they are significantly more costly to manufacture, and they do not they have the same energy density (amount of power that can be stored) nor lifespan as a lithium-ion.

Lithium-ion: have a higher energy density, i.e. they can store more electrical charge in a given size or volume, and are cheaper to manufacture, but they can have issues with aging.
Lithium-polymer: do not suffer from aging to the same extent so are a better choice in that aspect. However they are more costly to manufacture and as a result they may not suit all budgets. Sometimes it may be that it is best to spend less, especially if they are likely to be accidentally lost or left in places.

What's this Federal Aviation Administration's safety limit of 100Wh? Can I take my portable charger on an airplane?

Most airlines allow lithium batteries that do NOT exceed 100W/hours in the carry-on luggage. All external batteries with a capacity lower than 27027 mAh (100 Watt Hours) can legally and safely be taken on board airplanes. You can find the product specific information on the outside of the power bank. Also, consult your airlines for specific information about your flight and travel locations as there may be different regulations between airlines.

Here are the relevant requirements, quoted from Federal transportation security rules (Effective January 1, 2008):
Lithium ion batteries (a.k.a.: rechargeable lithium, lithium polymer, LIPO, secondary lithium).
-Passengers may carry consumer-sized lithium ion batteries [no more than 8 grams of equivalent lithium content or 100 watt hours (wh) per battery]. This size covers AA, AAA, 9-volt, cell phone, PDA, camera, camcorder, Gameboy, and standard laptop computer batteries.
-Passengers can also bring two (2) larger lithium ion batteries (more than 8 grams, up to 25 grams of equivalent lithium content per battery) in their carry-on. This size covers larger extended-life laptop batteries. Most consumer lithium ion batteries are below this size.
Check your airline's website for details.

The FAA legal limit is 100 watt hours. You calculate the watt hours of a battery pack by using the voltage of the internal lithium cells, not the output voltage. Lithium cells have a voltage of 3.6 volts, and the capacity of this battery is 26,800mAh. Formula for Watt hours is (mAh)*(V)/1000 = (Wh). So, (26800)*(3.6)/1000=96.48. This battery has a capacity of 96.48 Watt hours and therefore is under the FAA legal limit to be taken onboard a commercial aircraft.

Are lithium batteries allowed in CHECKED baggage?
Exteral lithium batteries are NOT allowed in CHECKED baggage. Laptops and cell phones are exempt. Check your airline's website for details.
